Why switching to self- hosted was a bad idea for me.

Before I tell you why it was a bad idea, let me first tell you why I tried to switch.

The pros of going self hosted

  1.  You have more control of your site.
  2. You can choose different add-on and plug-ins etc.    I was most interested in the updrafts plus plug in which does continuous back ups of your entire website for free.  I also wanted to check out the Yoast SEO plug in. Finally, I needed options to control the bots and spam that were attacking my blog.

On July 19th, I made my decision to make the switch to Siteground.  On July 20th, I jumped.  Siteground said, “we will do all the work for you”.  They didn’t 😦

The first thing that happened is I lost my theme.  Okay that I knew might be a possibility, no biggie.  The next thing that happened was I got an email from siteground that I needed to this and I needed to that with no direction on how to do the things they were asking.  Hours were spent on google and wordpress support channel, and the forums at

After I finally got all of my content moved to siteground, I lost 98% of my followers.  My posts were no longer appearing in reader, nor were emails being sent.  Once those issues seemed to be functioning at 50%, people were unable to comment, and the ones that were able to comment, couldn’t see when I responded to them.  I don’t sell anything on my blog, the whole reason I write a blog is the interaction with all the great people I have met, and without that there is no point.

On August 7th, I wrote that the verdict was still out on whether switching was worth it and gave some reasons I was struggling with the change.  After reviewing my stats since I made the change and seeing that I was getting an average of 10 hits a day versus the usual 100 or more I normally got each day, I found some liquid courage (Yah Coors Light)  LOTS OF IT and transferred everything back to, ALL BY MYSELF.  Since I did learn alot during this process I won’t call it a total waste.  But I also can not on any level recommend siteground, nor risking the loss of your followers by making a switch.

^400 words Billy 🙂 and no more Bitching….  Can we call it a draw? Instead….

Thank you to all my friends both in real life and in the blogosphere that have helped me test the changes and have stayed by my side.  I have missed everyone so much!

One step forward, two steps back

Do you ever feel like for every step you take forward, you take two backwards?  That is the best I can say to describe the events happening in my life right now.  I did think of using a hurricane or other storm as an example, but while those things ONLY cause disaster the things happening in my life are only causing me grief, and I haven’t given up just yet.  So what’s been happening here….

Instead of re-writing, or copying and pasting things from previous posts, I am going to add links to my previous posts if you want the back story.

Walking a minimum of 4000 steps a day

On July 13th, in the post let’s get moving.  I talked about making it a point to walk everyday to increase my endurance, strength, and stamina, even though I am afraid to walk alone and have had some pretty bad experiences.  The positives are that I have finally reached my goal of walking for a full mile at a time, and have had some days that I have reached more than 8000 steps (not at one time though).  I was doing good with the whole weight loss thing, ( I haven’t written about that yet), until Birthday week hit….yah cake?  My neighbor (who works nights) even started setting an alarm to wake up at 8 am and walk with me everyday.  I bought a rollator walker to help with my balance, which I used in the evenings to try to get a few more steps in.

One day after getting lots of steps in, I came home, took off my shoe and saw this…foot oww

Awww, shit. I had broken my foot a couple years ago, and had attributed the pain to “an old sports injury”.  The fact that it was so discolored told me that I couldn’t ignore it any longer.  I reluctantly called the podiatrist I had been referred to in the past.  I don’t want to be “one of those people” that claim that doctors treat patients without insurance differently, but after the office visit I have to be.

The doctor physically examined my foot, said it felt warm to the touch and was obviously very inflamed, but since I hadn’t suffered an actual injury “this time” he was going to call it GOUT.

reallyHe sent me to the lab for a uric acid test, gave me a prescription for indomethacin, and told me to keep ice on it for a a couple days, then to start doing stretches for it.

NO Xrays?!?!?!?  That’s it?!?!?!  Not even an order to stay off of it…..

I went to the lab and had the uric acid test done, which came back as negative for gout.  Ya think?!?!  I did not take the prescription because NSAIDS, cause my blood pressure to go through the roof, and make me sick to my stomach.  I instead have been living on advil and tylenol.  (also not good, but the pain got to be pretty bad even at rest).

Yesterday, I broke down and went to an immediate care center.  The first step while there was to do XRAYS.

It’s broken AGAIN!!!!  Is anyone really surprised?

So now I am back in a boot, yah that it’s a short boot this time, but a boot nonetheless.  I have an appointment Monday to see a surgeon. If I end up spending any real time in the boot again, I will be ordering an “Even Up” from Amazon this time.

I don’t have the time or the patience to figure out why the link to amazon isn’t working, but if you want to see what I am talking about please click the link below or google “even up”.

Basically, it’s something you attach to your other shoe to help not cause further injury by walking “crooked” or unevenly when you are stuck in a cast. IMO well worth the $20.00.

When I began writing today, I had envisioned telling you about all the fun ( said very sarcastically) I had trying to switch to self hosted, and updating you on Me and my shadow, but this post is pretty lengthy as it is so I will write separate posts….later.

It’s good to be Back…. I have missed interacting with everyone and feel like I have alot of catching up to do.

Birthday(s) week almost done…

Last Sunday, I turned 45 years old! I don’t know if I can actually say I look forward to aging, but I sure am grateful to have survived another year, especially when the odds have been stacked against me so many times.
As a kid I couldn’t wait to have another birthday. I was always the youngest kid in my class in school, and was always trying to “catch up” to my friends (Yes for a mere month, I was just like everyone else)

I didn’t like having an AUGUST Birthday though.  In fact, I hated that BOTH my brother and I got new school clothes for MY birthday.  All of my friends family’s were always trying to squeeze in “one more vacation” before school started, so no one was ever able to come to a party.

When I had my girls, I was determined that they would each have the most memorable birthdays ever!  The fact that they were born 6 years and one day apart, made it a bit challenging and expensive at times though.  Today is Thing One’s Bday, she is turning 27.  Tomorrow Thing 2 will be turning 21.

I don’t know if you ever made these “coupons” for your parents, or received them from your kids, but in my opinion these are the best gifts you can ever receive from your kids.

This year, my birthday present to Thing One is a set of coupons from me to her.  I volunteered to “mommy” her again for the day.  This consists of me doing her laundry, painting her bathroom, taking her out to lunch etc.  Can you believe I am super stoked about it too?!?!?  I am very grateful that she still WANTS me around, and that she is letting me do something for her.  (I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to independence)

If you have a minute more, please join me for a brief trip down memory lane.

I have to call special attention to the girls 10th and 4th bdays to thank my friends for helping me pull off these big parties year after year….

The parties started on Thing 1’s bday.  I think about 15 of her friends and 7 of mine came over to go swimming, compete in a limbo contest, go on a scavenger hunt throughout our neighborhood, make tie die tshirts , and concluded with all of the kids spending the night.  The morning of Thing 2’s bday, all of Thing one’s friends circled around the trampoline and sang happy birthday to her, we had pony rides, a pinata, more swimming, and of course another cake.  Have I ever told you I have really awesome friends and family?!?!?

How do you and your family celebrate birthdays?  Do your birthdays all fall close together?  What is your most memorable birthday?

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Tomorrow for Thing 2’s bday we are going to check out 21 of the 100 places that give you free things on your Birthday.  I can feel the sugar coma already.
