Treating Constipation without drugs

CLEAN THE TOILET…

Best Cure EVER for constipation!!!  I kid you not!… oh wait maybe that’s Murphy’s Law?

It never fails, the same day I clean the toilet, I NEED to clean the toilet again.  (The same way that when smoking was allowed in restaurants, it never failed,  the second I lit a cigarette, my food would be delivered.)

Obviously just cleaning the toilet won’t FIX constipation, but I am trying to make light of one of the worst symptoms I deal with….MS and Constipation.

Does MS cause constipation?

YES, it can, and frequently does.  In addition to MS itself causing bowel issues, often the medications one takes to treat MS symptoms cause constipation as well.  (Yah fun!)….Not even a little….smh

Okay all sarcasm aside, Constipation, when left untreated can cause multiple, even life threatening issues.  I found this link from Mayo Clinic very helpful in providing information about causes and treatments for constipation.

I am not a doctor, so I can not tell you that one type of treatment will work for you versus another, but I CAN share what works for me, and you can talk to your doctor about trying it.   Power Pudding was recommended to me by a therapist, while I was going through Pelvic Floor Therapy. (I am not endorsing this clinic, but they have a good explanation about the therapy.)

What Is “Power Pudding”?

Power pudding is a natural homemade “treatment” for constipation that is frequently used in nursing homes and assisted living centers to help people find relief from constipation.

What are the ingredients for Power Pudding?

The recipe for “power pudding” is as follows: Combine the following, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator

power pudding ingredients

1 cup applesauce

3/4 cup prune juice

1 cup Cream of Wheat (uncooked)

3 tbsp ground flax seed

When I began using power pudding, I started with 3 tbsp, followed by a 16 oz bottle of water each day for 3 days.  If I didn’t find any relief after 3 days, I was supposed to increase the amount of power pudding I consumed by 1 tbsp for another 3 days.  (same amount of water).  The goal was to have a bowel movement the size and shape of a small banana every day….. I literally LOL at that.  (Considering “My Normal” ,was maybe once a week if I was lucky, and only after using an otc drug etc for a couple days I literally LOL’d.)  I thought for sure they were as full of shit as I was (pun intended)

Does power pudding work for constipation?

I began taking it “as directed” and had a bowel movement on the second day.  Nothing like this banana she spoke of, but holy shit…I shit!!!!!  On day three, I had another Bowel Movement, (still not the banana type she talked about)…… banana

but having a BM 2x in one week had to be a record for me.  On day four, I increased the  “dosage” by another tbsp. and started having some kind of BM every day.  I am still “working it out”, but am so excited to finally have some relief I thought I would share. ( talking about poop, makes me feel like everything that comes out as an  innuendo)

The most full of shit I have ever been

21 Days without a Bowel Movement! No that’s not a typo– literally 21 days.  There are no words to describe the amount of pain I was in.  Phone calls to my doctors resulted in recommendations for OTC drugs and a referral to a Gastroenterologist.

otc constipation

Looking back I don’t understand why I wasn’t referred to the Emergency Room after the first week of trying their recommendations with no luck.  I chose to “self medicate” instead, taking 2 pain pills instead of one. ( making the whole problem even worse)…muttering something about hindsight.  By the 21st day, I did end up in the Emergency Room and subsequently admitted to the hospital for a week.  I am going to skip talking about the whole “cleaning out process” for now, but it did give new meaning to the phrase, “the shit hitting the fan”.

I know that the tone and language used in this entire post is sarcastic, that is how I deal with talking about difficult situations.  Most people don’t talk about “pooping” on the internet, but because constipation can be deadly, I thought it important to share a tool that I have found to help.  If you are suffering from constipation whether or not it is because of MS, don’t suffer in silence….talk to your doctor, talk to someone and realize there is help available.  I know that it’s an uncomfortable subject to talk about, but the consequences of doing nothing are way more uncomfortable.

  1. I just had an appointment with a gastroenterologist yesterday and yes MS, leaky gut, it’s all linked. He recommends kefir. Bought some just now. Will report results. Thanks for this back up plan—-you are right about the puns.

      1. Kefir is yogurt. Which might also be good for my bladder. Why not? My doctor advised me to try 6 oz. of kefir at a time. That might move a normal person. I should probably have started at 12 oz. and worked up from there. Off to buy another bottle and chug-a-lug lug.

  2. I have the opposite problem. I’m on meds to slow things down. If I weren’t on them, I’d be in royal room 9x in two hours. I’m having my first colonoscopy and endoscopy in two weeks. Shudder. I’m guessing I’ll have to stop the med helping me sometime before the prep.
They have got to come up with easier way to see things. This is ASSinine. 😉

    1. YES either extreme SUCKS!!!… unfortunately both are common with ms, and as side effects of prescription meds. I hope that they are able to give you some relief and answers after your testing. Neither procedure was horrible, uncomfortable yes, but not the worst thing I have been through….. Honestly the prep for the colonoscopy was the worst part of it. Best of luck to you!!!

      1. Thank you. The prep is what’s scaring me because I have fissures. I”m afraid the prep will shred me. I will be put fully to sleep for the actually scopes. I’ve requested that because my fear of medical anything is so bad it will trump sedation. They’ve agreed I need to be put right out. I both dread this prep and just want to get it over with so as to not have so much stress. I’m sorry you had to go through it too.

Oh gosh drinking a lot of water when I have no bladder is a whole other issue. I might as well just set up shop in the loo.

  3. I know what ya’ mean about da’ toilet! 21 days is frightening! I found a miracle cure, too. Omni Blue Magnesium. OMG! I go poop every day and it looks like a banana… Never have I wanted to take a picture of my poop and show it off proudly yelling I’m regular!!! I had a rectal prolapse so things were getting NOT FUNNY extremely fast. Surgery to fix that and magnesium to stay regular. If you ever want more info let me know. I don’t sell for the company, have no affiliation, just found out about their product in a support group and I am so glad I did! I blogged about it, I think, “I just want to walk to the Bathroom” is the name??? 9 drops in a glass of juice and I’m off to poo land without stabbing pains or the runs!~Kim

  4. Thank you for being so open and honest about the subject. So many people, patients and doctors, find it difficult to talk about and hearing your experiences first hand makes it easier to talk about and address. Here they only let you go 5 days before intervening and then it’s movicol and senna and lactulose.
. A friend didn’t go for 6 days due to cauda equina syndrome. The poor love now has to have daily peristeen wash outs. She hates doing them but she hates it even more when she has catastrophic accidents that she has to have help from her hubbu, which breaks her heart every time it happens. I struggle with my routine thanks to my MS but i am.desperately trying to train mu body but I’m not alwaus susccessful.
I never imagines I’d be talking poop at 4am….. always a first for everything!!

    1. 5 days is too much imo. and then drugs of course…it makes me angry that they always do drugs…if someone suffers why not TRY the natural stuff. Yes I know help them get “cleaned out” but especially in rehab, isn’t it about helping everything?….im precoffee still sorry if i sound cranky

  5. Thankfully my rehab consultant is hot on anything classed as abnormal and helps find ways of regulating and helping things along. I had the added problem of tri-daily ferrous sulphate which made it harder to go and turned everything black. 3 months of the damn stuff and i was begging to come off of it. Thankfully it was stopped 2 wks ago and things are on a more even keel despite my lack of feeling. If I don’t take myself to try I end up with heart palpatations , reflux and get very flustered. I then have less than 5 mins to get to the loo or disaster strikes.

  6. Yep! Know exactly what you’re talking about. Oh, the things people take for granted. I’ve done the 21 day thing, too. 21 days is my record and I hope to never break it!!! I don’t have MS that I’m aware of, anyway. But, I do have Gastroparesis and a hundred other invisible chronic illnesses. Poop for me is all or nothing…..21 days or 21 times in one day!!! Of course, that 21 times in one day doesn’t happen unless I have to load up on all kinds of prescription drugs and OTC meds to make me go, then IF it works, that’s what happens. Then I have anywhere from 3-10 appointments every week, so I have to schedule when I can take all these drugs so it’s not kicking in when I’m on my way to an appointment or even worse, at an appointment, because I’ve got like 2 seconds to get to the bathroom, if ya know what I mean. I appreciate the poop humor. I recently started drinking Kefir and worked up to 1 cup a day and was starting to go every day. That was very short lived, though. I was so happy. Thought I’d found the miracle cure. Yep, for a week, I did! Not giving up on it, just increasing the dose and we’ll see what happens. But, I am going to try this “POO” pudding, as I’m going to call it!!! Sure hope it works. Would be nice if when it worked, I would go like once or twice and be done, so I could leave the house and not be terrified that it would be kicking in all day and night. Making my list and as soon as I can get someone to go to the store and get me the ingredients, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. While 21 days w/out a bowel movement is not a record to strive for, I thought for sure I held that one in the clear. So sorry that you have been there as well 😦 I hope the poo pudding works for you!….just be sure to drink alot of water, or it could have the opposite effect. and try not to change too many things at once while you are “testing” and if you don’t mind, let me know how it works…Best of luck!!!!
